The short answer

To make your home smart, start with one problem, not a list of gadgets. You need a steady Wi-Fi, a phone and one device. The rest comes when you need it: lighting, air conditioning, locks, sensors.

You do not have to change the whole house, or decide today what it will look like in five years.

What "smart home" means

A smart home does the boring things by itself and tells you what is happening while you are away. The lights come on at dusk. The air conditioner switches off when the balcony door opens. A message on your phone says water has reached the kitchen floor, before the neighbour below sees it.

It is not one product. It is a set of small solutions that work together and that you control from one app, with your voice, or on a schedule.

Four steps to get started

  1. Pick the first problem. What bothers you most today? Lights left on, the air conditioner running in an empty home, a lost key, the fear of a leak? Start with one.
  2. Check the Wi-Fi. Most smart devices connect to your home Wi-Fi. If the signal does not reach every room, automations lag or stop. See why you need steady Wi-Fi across the home.
  3. Choose the first piece. One room or one need is enough. The table below helps.
  4. Grow whenever you like. Once the first piece works, add the next. If you choose devices that work together from the start, you never start over.

Wireless or wired

In most existing homes, wireless is the simpler road: a small relay behind your current switch, a sensor that sticks to the wall, a plug that goes into the socket. Wired suits you when you build or renovate from scratch. The comparison is in wireless or wired smart home.

Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, Matter: what you need to know

These are the "languages" devices speak. You do not need to learn them all. It is enough to know that Matter is a common standard that lets devices from different companies work together. The Connectivity Standards Alliance, which maintains it, has the official description at csa-iot.org. In plain words: Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread and Matter and what Matter and Thread change.

How much does it cost

There is no single price, because there is no single "smart home". The cost depends on how many points you want to control and on your space. That is why we start with a site survey: we look at your space and suggest only what you need. To prepare, see what information to have ready for a quote.

The five common mistakes

  • Starting with the most impressive, not the most useful. What does not solve something that bothers you will not get used.
  • Buying whatever is on offer. Devices that do not work together force you to run three apps.
  • Ignoring the Wi-Fi. It is the foundation. Signal first, devices second.
  • Putting everything in one place. If the internet goes down, the essentials (lights, the front door) must keep working without it.
  • Planning everything up front. You do not need to. Start small and grow.

Where to start

Tell us what bothers you. We look at your space during the site survey and suggest the first step that is worth it, built so it can grow when you want.
